Written by Kevin H aka 'The Heat' We have been hearing about the potential of this team for a number of years now, since we went unbeaten and the team known as "The Invincibles" we were told that for every player who left we had a ready made replacement waiting in the wings, while I agree with that for most part the replacements have come through have been brilliant, Fabregas being a casing example but how many Fabregas have we produced in the last few years? Yet here we are pinning our hopes that for our next game his hamstring does not pop, we all applauded when Fabregas out played Vieira on his first return to Arsenal and lets hope that he does the same next time but here it is, as the potential has not "yet" been fulfilled should Wenger splash the cash and I suppose that is the hard bit because we don’t want him to foolishly start splashing the cash (to appease the likes of me) and buy over priced players that do not deliver. The question now lays with Wenger and to a degree us fans, do we continue to put the faith in Wenger to bring us silverware while not splashing the cash? Do we give him continued support while we watch Chelsea, Man Utd pick up silverware? I'm not saying that spending money guarantees you success or it is a right to silverware, maybe I'm coming at this as someone who is impatient but 5 trophy-less years is a period where in my opinion a club like Arsenal should have won something. Now to the point that troubles me more than often of late should we continue to put faith in the professor who has been magnificent and gave me some of my greatest moments as fan of this great club. If he fails to deliver silverware this year my faith will be tested and honestly (please don’t shoot me, its only an opinion) that maybe it would be time for Arsene to leave, lets hope it does not come to that as Arsene has truly developed Arsenal over the past 13 years. I know that January is a tough month to get the right player at the right price but I'm sure that over this past year there have been players move to clubs who I thought would have been worth a gamble. Gareth Barry would have been good business, Vieira on a free would have been great to assist in nourishing the potential that we currently have (imagine him tutoring Song and speeding up his development) , Sol is back, this could be a shrewd piece of business and will be great for the dressing room and those away days up north we need some steel and experience, but we also need another world class midfielder and most definitely a world class striker to put us where we belong. This is why it is crucial that the professor strengthens this month as with injuries and suspensions we don’t want to fall short in the title run in. I may well be in the minority by saying that Wenger may have to go if again if no trophies come our way at the end of the season and I know that spending money is not the answer as I do like the fact that we live within our means and don’t rely on a billionaire owner (this may change in the future) but if he could get an Arshavin in every January who is truly world class and played in his correct position we would be leading from the front and likely to have had more silverware in the last 5 years. I'm sure like most Arsenal fans you kick every ball, lambaste every wrong referee decision and take great pride when we regularly beat the scum but it also hurts in May when where not picking up the league or on cup final day you cant bear to watch the game if where not playing. So that’s that, my fingers will be crossed for reinforcements in January and in May I hope to be singing we are the champion’s and honestly hope that the professor is the one to lead us to glory this season and beyond, as we say we “in Arsene we Trust”. |
