Kellys Eye - January Transfer Options
Written by Steve Kell

With the January transfer window about to open all Gooners are thinking will Wenger refuse to spend yet again or will he splash the cash?

Mario BalotelliThis time round the uncertainty has been taken away because Wenger has made it clear he is looking for players in the sales this window and he is not looking to hold back on his Christmas cash if the correct players are available.

Guessing which players Wenger will buy is like trying to choose the winning lottery numbers because you know he will pull a name out that nobody expects but there do seem to be a few names that keep resurfacing at the moment as well.

So the question that needs to be asked are which players are on Wengers radar for a transfer to Arsenal. Lets take a look at his options, firstly he needs to decide what he is after. Is this player going to be long term or short term, experienced or a budding player e.g. like Mario Balotelli (Inter Milan)

Everybody knows that shopping in Milan, Barcelona and other European cities is always going to be expensive so Wenger will have to open his wallet substantially wider to get the likes of any of the following:

Klass-Jan Huntelaar

Andre-Pierre Gignac

Edin Dzeko & Grafite

Bojan Krkic

Luca Toni

Ruud van Nistlerooy

Marouane Chamakh

Carlton Cole

Wenger's absolute number one is Wolfsburg's Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko. Arsene went for him last summer, had an offer turned down and Dzeko, 23, made it clear at that time he wanted to go to AC Milan. Wolfsburg doesn’t want to sell, don't have to sell and have slapped a £30m price tag on him.

Expect Arsene to make another offer for Dzeko who will drop straight into the team and brings qualities that we lack at the moment, he is 6ft 3in, powerful, strong, quick and prolific. Furthermore, he's now warming to the idea of coming to England rather than Italy. But it's hard to believe Wolfsburg will be willing to sell at a price Arsene (Scrooge) Wenger will want to pay.

The other options are negotiating a deal now for Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh who is available for free next summer or to go for Toulouse striker Andre-Pierre Gignac or even West Ham's Carlton Cole, but he is injured at the moment and we need fit players to hit the ground running straight away.

January is a great month for supporters and probably one that managers hate. But it can make or break any season and Wenger's record in January is exceptional, no matter what he says and some fans think there are deals to be done and Wengers history tells us this is when he tends to make the more expensive purchase, Reyes, Arshavin etc. Lets wait and see but I believe that we are going into the market.

I expect Klaas-Jan Huntelaar of Milan to arrive on a short term loan and a purchase totally off the radar, maybe a midfielder, but we are in a position to offer more than money because what we can offer is first team football to those players on the fringe of the national squad and fighting for their place to South  Africa this summers World Cup so i expect us to be fruitfull in our attempts to lure top players to us.

I read an interesting point of view the other day which makes sense if it is true, when the deal was done for our finance for the new stadium part of the agreement was that a certain percentage has to be available for player transfers, however Wenger has not been spending and he is in the extraordinary position of practically being forced to spend the money because of the contract, it can be used for players wages however the pocket millionaires would need to prove themselves with silverware before receiving more gold.
