This was the most beautiful ugly win i have seen for a long time.
Andrey Arshavin our little Russian ripped the heart out of the red half of Merseyside with a goal of stunning quality that has put the final nail in their coffin of any title hopes and has propelled Arsenal right back in the thick of it again.
Liverpool had had three game plans for this match, they tried the physical approach first of all with tackles so ferocious that every time you saw one coming you winced thinking there would be broken bones and limbs lying all over the place, then there was the falling over and trying to win it on penalties approach, any finally it was the Liverpool we all know and love the Hoofball approach.
Liverpool welcomed top scorer Fernando Torres back for his first start in six weeks and the Spanish striker seemed to invigorate Liverpool. However, he failed to find the back of the net early on after a Steven Gerrard pass split the Arsenal defence in two and he found himself with a glorious chance with a 1 on 1 with the keeper but managed to scuff his chance.

Arsenal had two game plans, play crap first half and then have a great second half, it was a simple as that. The first half performance was so poor even Arsene decided to have a go in the dressing room with a screaming and shouting session actually saying they did not deserve to wear the colours of Arsenal there attitude was so poor, every 50/50 was being won by Liverpool.
Andrey once again returned to haunt Liverpool FC for the second time in eight months at Anfield as his second-half wonder-strike saw Arsenal heap more misery on the Reds. In the build up to the game it was noticeable by its absence that the Robbie Fowler hat trick that gets shown every time this fixture takes place was replaced by the Arshavin quadruple goal fest, maybe the sign of things to come and Andreys last performance must have played on Merseysiders mind throughout the match.
The diminutive Russian, who scored all four in a 4-4 draw in April, hammered home after 58 minutes to complete a Gunners comeback after a Glen Johnson own goal had cancelled out Dirk Kuyt's first-half strike.
I was surprised at the strength of the team we had to put out, it was stronger than I thought we had available but we didn’t have a main striker who could lead the line but our little Ruskie had been returning to form over the last few weeks and he must have been quietly confident about this game, the Scousers were going to be wary of him as well which probably told us why he got the treatment he did from the Liverpool midfield and defence when he was repeatedly taken out.
Arsenal once again had more possession than their hosts and few would begrudge the Gunners the points as they casually moved up to third in the Premier League still with a game in hand.
Rafael Benitez's men looked a completely different side to the one which suffered a demoralising 2-1 defeat by Fiorentina on Wednesday and it came as no surprise when Kuyt slammed in the 41st minute.
But just as Liverpool looked to settle into a similar routine in the second period, disaster struck as Samir Nasri's cross caught the faintest of touches off Jamie Carragher, hit Johnson and rolled past the wrong-footed Reds keeper Jose Reina to the Gunners delight.
Within ten minutes the game had turned on its head as it was then that Arshavin touched the ball away from Johnson on the edge of the area before firing a trademark bullet-shot into the near corner and sent the travelling Gooners into delirium.
Liverpool weren't about to relinquish the points that easily and barraged forward again but, for all their possession, the Reds' attacking threat seemed to have been snubbed out by an Arsenal side that had Wengers half time words still ringing in their ears.
Italian Alberto Aquilani was soon introduced and, despite multiple crosses being fired into the Arsenal box, the ball would not fall for Liverpool because the Arsenal defence started to play with conviction and unity, Liverpool stay seventh in the league - a demoralising 12 points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
And on a final note, i have just managed to save a couple of youngsters from the agony of being a Scouse Supporter, i joined them up to the Junior Gunners in the last month, all i can say is Callum and Brandon Wingrove is welcome to heaven and enjoy the life of being an Arsenal fan. |
